Art Review: Cool Art, Works on Paper.
Paper Show Turns The Page, Revealing Itself.

Through September 22, 1995. Sarasota County Arts Council, 1351 Fruitville Road, Sarasota.

Paper, when seen under the microscope, shows itself to be a mesh of fibers. But as the art material in an exhibit on the walls of the Sarasota County Arts Council, paper reveals itself in unexpected ways.

An installation by Jill Hoffman, conjures up Fibber McGee's closet, except, rather than spilling over with claptrap, Hoffman's closet overflows with shredded documents and red tape.

The Hoffman work is reminiscent of Claire Zeisler's tapestries of the 70's that breached the barrier between art and craft. Like Zeisler's "Coil Series II-A Celebration", which showed vertical strands of cloth ending in curls in the manner of gushing water, Hoffman's strands of paper appear to similarly bubble like cascading water.

But along with multiple examples of creative uses of paper by 75 artists in this show, paper used the old-fashioned way - as surface for painted or photographic picture-making - also is included.

While it's fun to see how the other artists in this show play with paper, compelling imagery like Hoffman's work is still what art is about.
