Resume: Visual artist/mixed media

Work space: Home/studio in Sarasota

Hometown: Seattle; living in Sarasota since 1979

I decided to be an artist when: I knew I wanted to be a serious artist after my first year in College (California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland).

My inspiration was: In my first course of modern art history, I was shocked by the Kasimir Malevich painting of the white square. I pretty much threw my books down and decided there was nothing more to be said about painting.

The unifying theme of my work is: It is a conceptual thing. It has to do with the experiment of the materials, texture, energy as opposed to imagery. My work is about energy that goes into painting.

My work idiosyncrasies are: I have to put on a pair of cowboy boots, I often wear gloves. I need music going. I put on a certain pair of old jeans and my apron that I've worn for 20 years and is still covered with paint. It's kind of like war paint, you know, I dress for the occasion.

My unfulfilled ambition is: To have a big studio to work in. A space to do really large paintings. I've got paintings inside me that need to be made, and most of them are really big.
